Unix Admin FAQs

In order to help you find the answers you need - fast - we've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions regarding our services. If you don't find the answer to your question here, we'll be happy to help you out. Just contact us with your inquiry.

What services do you perform?

We do a wide variety of tasks related to system administration, ranging from user management to troubleshooting, CGI installation to custom scripting, as well as consultation and advising. A more verbose list of our service is on our about page.

Is Unix Admin a company?

Nope! We're a group of independent sysadmins, programmers, and other geeks who have come together for a common cause - to provide affordable unix services to everyone, and to make a couple of bucks. Each job is delegated to the admin most capable of handling the task, and you'll work directly in contact with that person.

How much does it cost?

We believe that our prices are the most reasonable around. Check out our fee schedule to see what we charge for various services.

During which hours are service available?

Most of our admins prefer to work during the evening or late night hours (US time) but arrangements can usually be made to provide service at any time of day or night. We'll do our best to fit in with your time constraints.

Do you need physical access to my machine?

Not at all. As the name Unix Admin suggests, all of our services are performed offsite, via remote login. Obviously, there are some things which can't be done remotely (e.g. installing an operating system on a new machine) and we can't perform this type of work. Everything we do is telecommute work.

Do you need root access to my machine?

It depends on what type of work you need done. For administrative work, we'll need the appropriate access to carry out the task. For basic work such as CGI script installation, user access is normally sufficient.

How do I provide you with login information securely?

We have an SSL form available for the submission of confidential information, and we can also accomodate PGP-encrypted email. In the case of secure email, a new PGP key is created for each client and deleted once the job is finished. Clients are highly encouraged to use one of these secure methods to deliver usernames, passwords, and other sensitive information; and we discourage the transmission of this data in plaintext format.

What payment options are available?

Our admins accept payment via PayPal, business check, cashier's check, or personal check. If you require accountancy for tax purposes, you'll need to provide a W2 or 1099 directly to the admin who takes your project.

When do I pay?

You don't pay until the job is done, period. If for any reason we can't complete the task, you don't pay a dime - that's our 100% No-Risk guarantee.

Got a question we didn't answer? Don't hate us, we've only included the most frequent ones here. Just contact us with your question and we'll get back to you ASAP!
